April 20, 2009
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) held its annual
orientation and evaluation meeting for its 16 correspondents on April 16 and
17, 2009 in Accra, Ghana.
Thirteen out of the 16 member-network presented and
discussed the state of press freedom and freedom of expression in the sub
region as well as challenges that media face particularly with the new forms of
violations characterised by financial pressure and constraints.
Participants from Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Guinea and La
Côte d’Ivoire presented the media situation in their respective countries where
elections are envisaged towards the reinstatement of democracy.
The Niger correspondent also presented the situation in his
country where the media have been under pressure since supporters of the Head
of State publicly declared the need to suspend the Constitution in order to
allow President Tandja Mamadou to stay in power for 3 additional years when his
last term ends in December 2009.
During the meeting, the correspondents were taken through the
Rights Based Approach (RBA) to monitor free expression.
