The premises of Dakar-based privately-owned Wal Fadjri Media
Group were in the afternoon of September 25,
2009 vandalised by followers of Serigne Modou
Kara Mbacke, a leader of an influential Islamic religious
sect.
The armed followers, who seriously injured staff members present, also
destroyed the station’s equipment including computers and a generator.
The windows of the building were also smashed.
Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)’s correspondent reported that
the attack followed a broadcast of a September 25 newspaper review of a
criticism against the sect leader for his commentary endorsing the
participation of President Abdoulaye Wade in the next country’s presidential
election slated for 2012.
The criticism published in the Wal Fadjri newspaper accused the
sect leader of enjoying government privileges as a result of his support for
the Wade’s administration.
The correspondent said at the time of the attack on the premises,
another set of followers had also stormed the home of Lamine Niasse, chairman
of the media group and attempted arresting him, but he was saved by the police.
Meanwhile, the sect leader has apologised to the media group, following
his invitation by the Criminal investigations Department of the Senegalse
police.
